Black Monday - Hiring and Firings

Ahead of Black Monday, we're taking a look at who might be involved in the traditional head coach hiring and firings. The NFL's Career Development Advisory Panel has highlighted a few names that could be in the frame for a Head Coach job in the coming weeks, with some notable names on this list.

Vikings Coach Pat Schurmur Josh McDaniels, currently the Offensive Coordinator in Foxborough, is someone on who could be on the move again. He'll be looking at Kyle Shanahan getting Jimmy G and having success so will want his own gig again. We see him ending up at someone like Oakland which would put out Todd Downing, who has never been a coordinator before this year. Oakland have great players but not a great team, this is why McDaniels could be good. The other option for McDaniels is the Lions due to the links with the GM Bob Quinn who used to be a Pats personnel guy.

For Pat Shurmur, Vikings OC, it's been his work which Sam Bradford last year and Case Keenum this year that will make him attractive. Similar results with 2 different QBs promotes confidence it's the coaching being the difference, just take a look at Bradford and Keenum's completion % - 71.6 (2016) and 67.3 (2017) respectively. Generally a team with a poor offence and a Qb that needs work will be looking at him. The Bears, who have seen it 2 times a season and a QB who needs better coaching, will certainly have Shurmur in their thoughts.

Jim Schwartz, current DC in Philadelphia, is rumoured to be in line for the New York Giants HC job. Teams often go in the opposite direction after firing a HC so experience will be key for the Giants. A consideration in New York however is who they will hire as the General Manager with Gettleman of the Panthers the current favourite.

Matt Nagy could make a move to the Browns due to the connection with John Dorsey, which could open a move for Alex Smith to be the Browns QB1. Texans and Cardinals are also in the frame for movers however the Watson injury derailed the Houston season and Arians won’t retire so we think it will be as is here.
